Google Analytics – This analytics package is probably the most widely used because it’s, well, Google.  The tracking package has been designed for the small business owner and the large enterprise.  The tool will tell you how visitors find your site, how they navigate through your site, and any actions that are performed on your site such as conversion tracking.  There are various reports and graphs that can be run.  Implementation of the tracking software is as simple as copying a piece of HTML code and pasting this in your webpage before the body.  Have a WordPress blog?  Use the Google Analytics plugin to make implementation even quicker. 

ShinyStat – This free service provides realtime tracking of visitors to your site. The company has been around since 1994.  Among the various options available using the free version are web counter stats, password protected reports, search engine & keyword analysis, country of origin analysis, and realtime stats for the last 15 visitors to your site.   For the small business the free version will do just fine but if more is needed they do offer updgraded Pro and Business versions.

Yahoo! Web Analytics - If you are a yahoo business merchant or advertiser are eligible to open a free analytics account with Yahoo.  This analytics package is completely free for users and was designed to help you monitor the actions and experience of your visitors online.  The tool helps you do this by allowing you to track ads, referrals to your site, keywords tracking, conversion tracking and much more.  The tool allows for realtime tracking and exporting of raw analystics data.   

GoStats – In exchange for placing a free web stats counter on your website linking back to the GoStats site, you’ll be able to take advantage of their free tracking software.  The service has an easy to use report section for viewing your returned data.  Dinstinguish between unique and returned visitors.  Monitor your visitors pathway taken through your site.  The company was been around since 1999 is recommended by many as a another reliable free online stats analyzer. 

Piwik - This free web analytics software is downloaded to your own computer and run on your own local webserver.  The tool is built with plugins that you can add or delete depending on your preference.  This tool is great for high traffic websites as there are no page view limits.  You control the software.  Keep in mind that Piwik is an open source community driven analystics tool and much of the software is consistently being updated.

StatCounter – This is a free version and a paid version of the software.  StatCounter does not require any links to be placed in order create a free account.  Like other tracking tools you simply past in the HTML code provided by the service and monitor your free analytics stats from their user interface.  The tool monitors visitor paths, entry and exit statistics, keyword analysis and referring information.  They have a high pageloads/month of 250,000 for small to medium size sites.  Anything above this and you’ll be directed to upgrade your account. 

Tracking202 – If you are involved with pay per click advertising using Google Adwords, Yahoo Paid Search, CPV advertising and any othe paid search networks you’ll benefit from this 100% free tracking tool.  Tracking202 is an open source tracking tool that is designed exclusively for the paid search marketer.  The software will give you realtime tracking of your ppc campaigns.  With its Spy View you’ll be able to see data come in the second someone click or views your ad.  The software allows for A/B split testing of landing pages to see which test page is converting better.  I’ve been hard pressed to find another free ppc tracking tool that does as much as this software.  If anyone knows of anything better please let me know.     They do offer a paid version that will do the work of automatically pulling data from the search engines and your affiliate networks. 

Prosper202 – This is the free self-hosted version of the Tracking202 software.  Some marketers and advertisers are reluctant to have their precious data hosted on a third-party systems and prefer to have complete control of the data themselves.  This tool will allow you to download the entire tool to your own dedicated webserver.  With the use of your dedicated server the tool should perform a bit faster when pulling data and generating reports.  Need a url rotator?  The tool will also allow you to rotate between specified landing pages to track better converting copy.

AdAlyzer – AdAlyzer is a link and ad tracking software tool that is offered for free through ISO Register.  This tools will track your marketing efforts whether your doing newsletters, email autoresponders, press releases, e-books, free ads and paid ads.  Basically anywhere that you’re placing a link that is pointing to your site, AdAlyzer was designed to track it.  Through the ISO Register your given a free lifetime membership to use the software.  You’ll be able to create and track an unlimited number of links.  Once into your ISO Register account you’ll be able to view a video tutorial and site tour of how to use the product.

Back in 2005 we had never heard about many of the different ways of creating websites.  Blogs at this time were definitely mainstream but we had known nothing of their existence and how to set one up.  We had done some searching for a bit and set our sites on the the use of website templates.  I knew nothing about html or Dreamweaver and I couldn’t fathom having to wait 2-3 months before getting our new “foolproof” idea up and running.    So, we did what many did back then and found a couple “website designers”.  The first designer was given the simple task of taking one particular website template design, tweaking it and implementing a back-end for a shopping cart.  What we got was a gobbled up mess of a site that didn’t function properly and looked extremely hideous.  That particular failure set us back about $500. Needless to say we immediately severed that transaction before we dug ourselves in deeper.

As you would expect we did not learn our lesson there.  From there we figured that we wouldn’t mess around. We would rather go straight to a known professional.  The person we chose came on recommendation from another website owner.  The new designer was in-fact more knowledgeable and did a much better job at delivering on what our vision was for the site.  Although it wasn’t 100% what we had dreamed of, it was a start.  When the site launched we had a complete and uniquely designed front end with unique content.  We also had a fully functional back-end that did what it was designed to do.  So how much did this site end up costing us?  $2500 dollars.  I say again, $2500 dollars.  Now I know some businesses spend 10 times and even 100 times as much getting businesses off the ground, but for a couple of optimistic newbies who had never stepped foot in the business world before, $2500 dollars was a significant amount.

We all know that hind-sight is 20/20, and my 20/20 vision today tells me that this was probably one of the most damaging financial blows we experienced while the business was going.  I know we could have done so much better in finding a more cost effective alternative online at that time, had we known of its existence.  With the internet being so massive and so adaptive, it is hard to know where to turn and what to do at any given time.  There could be the “God’s Grail” to your business online but if you don’t know how to find it then that could mean sudden death to your business.  This is an issue we have come across many times in our online journey to become successful online business owners.

Today, there are so many free resources online for building websites and blogs that any business owner could get a site off the ground with minimal financial outlay and time.  Sites and services like Wordpress, Blogger, Drupal, Wix & Weebly all have tremendous ability in allowing users to create fully functional websites and blogs.  Gone are the days of having to know complex HTML and having to hire web designers to build a fully functioning site.  Everything is laid out in easy to understand tutorials.  Start off with a template that you like and customize it to your liking with the editing tools that each programs offers.  So, if your new to the online business world and are looking for a cost effective alternative to hiring a high-priced web designer, take a look into a couple of the above mentioned site builders and you might just find that “Holy Grail” for your business start-up.

A couple years after shutting the doors to the business we found out that someone had acquired the abandoned domain name and started up the same business.  Same idea, same name, yet different owners and I’m sure, less expensive start-up costs.  What they’ve done with the site is amazing and all-in-all I wish them all the success in the world.

Montastic – Montastic calls themselves “the free website monitoring service that doesn’t suck”.  With this service you’ll have the ability to monitor in intervals of as low as 30 minutes with the free service.  Email notifications are available as this is a standard amongst the website monitoring services.  One additional benefit of the service that you’ll be able to download and use their Mac & PC widgets to stay on-top of your status.

Free Site Status- Free Site Status also offers free web monitoring and will monitor every 60 minutes for free accounts.  This service does provide historical performance statistics reporting for up to 60 days.  One of the downsides of this particular free services is that there is no RSS alerts and only one email contact allowed.

Site 24×7 – With this services free account you are allowed up to 2 monitoring setups.  Checks are run every 60 minutes and you’ll have access to their web page content check.  You’ll be able to setup you account for email notification life many of the other services in this industry.  Compared to some of the other services listed, this service is a bit bare when it comes to free features offered.

InternetSeer – The free service option will allow up to 24 checks which of course boils down to 60 minute intervals between checks.  This company has been around since 2000 and is currently monitoring over 1.3 million websites.  You’ll never be charged for the number of contacts as this is an unlimited feature of the service.  Choose up to 3 alerts types which include text, email, and pager alerting.

Service Uptime – Service Uptime is one of the more meatier programs in terms of free features offered.  You’ll get 30 minute interval checking and lifetime statistics.  They offer the ability to receive email or SMS alerts which are alerts via your mobile phone.  The company has been doing business since 2004.  They have 10 different  monitoring locations.

Site Uptime – Choose from either 30/60 minute interval checking.  You can select when to be alerted of your sites failure.  Many time your site will only be down for just a short period of time and there would be no need to be alerted if you site were back up and running moments later.  Adjust these setting to your liking.  Site Uptime has 4 monitoring locations.

Pingdom – Pingdom offers a bunch of additional items that provide tremendous free value.  Where many free services do not offer error analysis, this service will allow you to see error reports that will help in determine what the problem is.  You’ll be allowed 20 SMS alerts.  They offer a free iPhone download app that will allow you to monitor your account using your mobile phone.  In addition to this they also offer a desktop notifier that will discreetly monitor you website and give alerts right on your screen.  Become a member of the world-wide GIGRIB network and submit up to 10 different sites for free public monitoring.

Monitis – Monitis is another free service that will allow website monitoring.  This service goes a bit further and has capability to monitor traffic statistics as well such as unique visitor information.  The service allows for email, SMS, RSS, and IM message alerts.  They offer different widgets for different systems including Mac users.

Watch Mouse – This service has been around since 2002.  They offer free website monitoring with 20 minute intervals for the free account.  This is one of the lowest interval times of all of the free services listed.  One of the drawbacks is that the service only allows 2 SMS alerts per month.

Overall I think this tool will help to provide an elevated user experience for most viewers.  It’s also important to note that if the particular user/reader wants to change a couple options or just doesn’t like the tool, there are settings built into the tool that will allow each user to customize.  Just hover over one of the snap shots, drag your mouse over to the top right corner and select the snap shot options.  Here you will be able to customize the experience to your liking or disable the tool completely.
