For me Toastmasters is a resource that I’ve discovered that has helped in my personal development the most. To be honest, the first time I visited a meeting which was back in October of 2006, I was so overwhelmed and excited about what I saw and experienced in that first meeting. I didn’t attend another meeting for about 2 ½ years because at the time, my mindset was not in the right place. I’ve since joined Toastmasters and have realized that this one tool will probably aid the most in my personal development and business success.
Toastmasters is a nonprofit organization, started in 1924, that is dedicated to helping individuals develop and fine-tune communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters attend the meetings and perform impromptu speeches, prepared speeches, and structured leadership roles. Everything takes place in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Why you should consider joining?
If you’re interested in learning and developing the following skills, Toastmasters is an organization that can surely aid in your personal and business development. According to Toastmasters you will…
- Increase self confidence
- Become a better listener
- Reach you professional and personal goals
- Increase leadership potential
- Communicate and learn effectively
- Improve presentation skills
- Build the ability to motivate and persuade
- Become more successful and you career
For me it has been about accomplishing these above things and also conquering the biggest fear I have ever had, which is public speaking.
So why is this our first post?
This is our first post because we have found tremendous value in being apart of this organization, and we understand that there are many business professionals that would benefit from knowing what Toastmasters has to offer. We understand and truly believe that personal development plays a large role in the success of any business, online and offline. You are the foundation of whatever business you’re running and we also understand that working on yourself creates a solid foundation for any business to stand on. This will not be for everyone but we know that everyone could potentially find value in an organization like this.
So where’s the free?
It will cost you nothing to attend your first Toastmasters meeting. I attended about three meetings before I decided to hand over the money for membership. In those three meetings I was also offered the opportunity to get up and participate to get a true feel for what I would be experiencing. After attending the first meeting you should get a good idea of what Toastmasters really is and how it can help you in your business and personal development. If you do choose to continue and take the plunge, becoming a member does require a couple fees. There is a one-time $20 new member fee and dues of around $27 that are reoccurring every six months.
